Abstract
Based on the original work compiled by Sarah H. Harper and edited by Frank H. Smyrl, 1977.
Updated by Vicki Betts, January 1, 2011

In 1977, Sally Harper, librarian in charge of the Local History Room at Tyler Public Library, and Frank Smyrl, professor of history at Texas Eastern University (now University of Texas at Tyler), published a bibliography of Smith County in Chronicles of Smith County, Texas. Almost thirty years later, I have attempted to update this work utilizing both printed and online resources. This is naturally a never-ending process as additional materials are located and, hopefully, produced. Areas still to be explored include the Smith County Historical Society Archives, public libraries in Smith County towns outside of Tyler, and a few city and county offices.
The original bibliography noted locations of materials at Tyler Public Library, the Smith County Historical Society Archives, and Tyler Junior College Library. I have expanded these locations by adding Texas College Library, the University of Texas at Tyler Library, and Netlibrary, with the symbols listed below. Expanding resources on the internet, including online library catalogs and databases such as WorldCat and America: History and Life, have also allowed me to locate Smith County materials in such far-flung places as California and Kentucky.
