Abstract
Although usually thought of as a very conservative area, Smith County, Texas, was home to an active socialist movement during the early 20th century. Tyler hosted three socialist encampments, and the party sponsored a reading room on the south side of the square. Support was strongest, however, in some of the rural areas, perhaps as a result of land tenancy issues. Several precincts approached or exceeded a 50% socialist vote before World War I collapsed support entirely.
