"The American Red Cross in Smith County During World War I"
Smith County Historical Society (2013)

Abstract
The Tyler, Texas Red Cross chapter was formed in June, 1917, two months after the United State declared war on Germany. During the next approximately two years, membership expanded into Smith County communities and also involved African-American groups, although on a segregated basis. They made comfort bags, bandages, knitted various clothing items, made hospital garments, packed Christmas boxes, built and maintained a railroad station canteen, and raised funds. They also participated in the grand welcome home celebration.
