About Upul Attanayake

Dr. Upul Attanayake is an Associate Professor of Civil and Construction Engineering at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan.  In 1998, he obtained his B.Sc. (Eng.) degree with honors from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.  He obtained his M.Eng degree specialized in Structural Engineering in 2001 from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand.  In 2006, Dr. Attanayake obtained his PhD. from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. 

Dr. Attanayake’s technical specialties include structural and bridge engineering, jointless bridges, accelerated bridge construction, condition assessment and health monitoring of structures, concrete durability, nondestructive testing, finite element applications, and sustainable built-environment.  Dr. Attanayake has secured more than $2.6 million research funding from external agencies and more than $0.8 million from other sources.

Dr. Attanayake is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Michigan.  His affiliations with the Transportation Research Board Technical Committees include AFN30-Durability of Concrete (member 2007 – 2016) and AFF30 Concrete Bridges (member 2014 – present).  Dr. Attanayake is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honor Society.  He has authored/co-authored more than 85 peer-reviewed papers and more than 35 technical reports.  He has delivered more than 75 presentations at national and international conferences and professional meetings.  Further, he has been the organizer and instructor of more than dozen of workshops on various topics.

Dr. Attanayake has been recognized with many awards including 2020 Excellence in Discovery Award for securing the highest amount of external research funding for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Western Michigan University; 2018 Excellence in Discovery Award for securing the highest amount of external funding for the Departmental of Civil and Construction Engineering, Western Michigan University; the 2012 Outstanding Reviewer of the ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering; the 2012 Outstanding New Researcher of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Western Michigan University; ExCEEd (Excellence in Civil Engineering Education) 2008 Teaching Fellow; Graduate Research Assistantship from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Wayne State University, and the Millennium Scholarship (by the Government of Norway), Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand.
