About Tonya Willingham

Tonya Willingham joined Campbell as a full-time nursing instructor and course director in January 2016. After developing and directing 4 courses in the new program she transitioned to the assistant director position with the school of nursing. She continues to teach within the program, is the SON experiential director, and coordinates the pre-licensure BSN curricula. Tonya also offers her healthcare expertise as an adjunct professor for the Master’s of Clinical Research Program.

Her nursing experience is in orthopedics, post-anesthesia care, and long-term care. 

Her nursing education experience is focused on pre-licensure teaching strategies, as evaluation methods, and curriculum development. Tonya is an emerging leader in nursing education as she was selected to participate in the 2021-2022 cohort of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Elevating Leaders in Academic Nursing Program. She also is the president-elect of the North Carolina League for Nursing.

Her research interest is in nursing student success and clinical evaluation of nursing students. She also has interests in conceptual teaching, active and team-based learning in the classroom, and supporting student success for NCLEX-RN.

Tonya has offered her nursing expertise to local nonprofits such as World Relief Durham and the Samaritan Health Clinic. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the National League of Nursing, the North Carolina League of Nursing, and the InterVarsity Nurses Christian Fellowship.
