Abstract
This essay is a contribution to the history of the first woman's rights newspaper, The Una--specifically, the story of Elizabeth Oakes Smith's attempt to inaugurate The Egeria (announced at the National Woman's Rights Convention of 1852) with Paulina Wright Davis before their disagreement over the content and purpose of the paper led to Oakes Smith's disappearance from its editorship. At issue, in all, Scherman argues, is a concept of voluntary, honorific, or "free" literary labor Oakes Smith could not afford to honor.
