She Can Play Ball: Rhetorical Power in Elizabeth Oakes Smith's "The Dignity of Labor"
(2014)
Abstract
Departing from the contexts of the American Lyceum recovered by Mary Kupiec Cayton and Angela Ray, this paper introduces readers to Elizabeth Oakes Smith's transition from a successful career in "belles lettres" to career as a lyceum speaker. Specifically, I address Oakes Smith's co-optation of the lyceum audience's purposes and expectations to deliver a feminist critique of an economic system refusing to afford opportunities for women outside the home.
