Academic Retention: Predictors of College Success

Abstract
Psychological variables and growth mind-sets are beginning to be understood in retention research. Using the High Capacity-21 Scale (HCAP-21) and the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI). data was collected from 327 incoming freshman consisting of two groups (Non-scholars; at-risk) and (Scholars; honor students). Groups were assessed at Time 1; beginning of semester and Time 2; end of semester. Groups were measured on Prudence, Ambition, and Approach to Learning from the HPI and traits associated with resilience being Hope, Commitment, Accountability, and Passion as measured by the HCAP-21. Results showed significant differences between groups. Scholars scored significantly higher on Prudence, Ambition, Approach to Learning, Commitment, and Passion compared to Non-scholars. Significant differences were also shown in number of hours attempted compared to hours earned. Non-scholars earned fewer hours compared to hours attempted than Scholars. The study concludes that psychological variables have an important role in mindset and in determining academic success.
