About Dr. Thomas Mueller

After a 20-year career in the advertising/marketing industry that included work with Wrangler, ProRodeo, Supercross, NASCAR and other major companies, Dr. Thomas S. Mueller now teaches advertising at Appalachian State University, both on campus and through his department’s distance education program. His teaching specialities are advertising ethics, international advertising, social media marketing, media planning and sales, and analytics modeling. A mixed-methods researcher, Mueller has explored consumer perceptions and predictions of behavior related to a number of topics. A study of consumer perception of power providers as part of a peak power reduction initiative, for example, was conducted with Appalachian’s Center for Analytics Research & Education (CARE).

A former endurance sport athlete, Mueller co-founded the Active Living community at Appalachian, which brings together students interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is one of nearly 20 residential learning communities at Appalachian that create an academic experience outside of the classroom. He is the senior member of Appalachian’s faculty in residence program and is part of the new residential curriculum initiative.

Mueller’s versatility as a writer, scholar and educator is evident in the topics of his self-published books, which include “Mind Over Diet: Psychology, Food, Fitness and the Art of Self-Negotiation” and “Adolf Hitler and Martin Luther: Anti-Semitism, Nazi propaganda and the German Lutheran Church.”
