About Thomas Groves

My research agenda has surrounded questions about how simple nervous systems integrate a diverse set of sensory modalities to inform perception and make decisions about behavior. In particular, most of my work has utilized the medicinal leech to take a neuroethological approach in investigating how animals use visual systems to extract specific features of a visual scene. A principal challenge of neuroethology is to understand the neural substrates that drive adaptive behavior within certain contexts. This approach involves the identification of cellular properties and describing synaptic interactions between sensory neurons, interneurons, and motoneurons involved in producing a specific behavior.
