Abstract
Gunnison Sage-grouse populations are declining throughout their range. In Utah, the species only occurs in San Juan County. Current management of Gunnison Sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus) in Utah is based on studies of Greater Sage-grouse and limited investigations of Gunnison Sage-grouse in Colorado. The San Juan County Gunnison Sage-Grouse Working Group (SWOG) was formed in 1996 to address concerns regarding species population declines. No studies have been conducted to determine the summer ecology of Gunnison Sage-grouse in San Juan County, Utah. I investigated the movement patterns and nesting, brood rearing, and summer habitat use of Gunnison Sage-grouse in San Juan County, Utah. This information could be used to guide SWOG's conservation and management strategies in San Juan County.
From 2001-2002, I monitored 13 radio-collared Gunnison Sage-grouse. Adult survival and nesting success in my study was higher than that reported for other populations studied in Colorado
