Abstract

Throughout the past century of American cultural anthropology, there has developed a general consensus regarding the utility of distinguishing, in both our descriptions and in our attempts at explanation, “the native’s point of view” from that of the outside observer. Whether one is primarily interested in explicating the former and assessing its role in shaping social behavior, or in taking culture itself (defined as an ideational system) as the “thing” to be explained, this collection of 14 papers from a 1980 A.S.A. conference in Edinburgh will be welcome.
