Hard Grief for Hard Love: Writing Through Doctoral Studies and the Loss of My Mother
Narratives of Hope and Grief in Higher Education (2020)
  • TJ Stewart, Dr., Iowa State University
Abstract
In this chapter, I share a combination of writings from personal blogs, social media, and course assignments that convey how I went about navigating grief, and how the process of learning to write as a doctoral student allowed me to write through grief. Through that writing, I found a pathway to healing and a pathway back to my mom. I frame my story through hooks’ (All About Love: New Visions. Harper Collins, New York, 2000) writings on love, and through discussions of how my personal narratives were a form of internal dialogue that enhanced my hope, and I believe, healing.
