By what mechanisms do terrestrial organisms (esp. plants and bacteria) obtain the nutrients needed to sustain life, and in so doing, how do they alter their environment ? Using the tools of biochemistry and spectroscopy, we seek precise definitions of "niche" and "acclimation", key concepts in modern ecology.
