Autonomism, DIY Culture, and Transversal Dissent: Parallel Infrastructure as a Tactic for Political Expression
National Communication Association Annual Convention (2007)

Abstract
Combining Roland Bleiker's (2000) concept of tranversal dissent with Czech dissident Vaclav Benda "parallel polis" hypothesis I explore the confluence of anarchist autonomist practice and DIY culture as a free speech tactic. Using the global Independent Media Center network as a case study, I argue the building of alternative infrastructures is a hallmark of dissent and political expression at the turn of the century.
