Abstract
In the early 1970s, Mississippi folklorist Bill Ferris visited Tutwiler and recorded a few songs by fiddler Tom Dumas, but he did not record much biographical information about the musician. Using recently discovered government documents and newspaper articles, this article attempts to tell the story of Thomas Jefferson Dumas, an African American musician who played old time in Mississippi.
