Conflict-Sensitive Repatriation: Lessons from Displaced Communities in North-eastern Nigeria
Conflict Trends (2017)
  • Tatsushi Arai
Abstract
Nigerian communities displaced by the insurgency of Boko Haram and the military's counterinsurgency operations struggle to find a way to return home. The unprecedented scale of displacement and resettlement efforts in the region calls for not only effective humanitarian support but also an increased capacity of these communities and humanitarian agencies to prevent and manage inter-communal disputes. Based on the author's field research and capacity-building activities in Northeastern Nigeria, this article examines ways for these communities and stakeholders to build capacities to handle conflicts practically while utilizing the traditional mechanisms of community-based dispute resolution.
