About Tanya Fitzgerald

Tanya has a varied professional career and has held positions as a secondary school teacher, head of department, a university lecturer and team manager in a corporate company. She has been at Unitec since 1998 and been responsible for the growth and development of a number of postgraduate progammes in the School of Education.
Tanya's research interests span two fields; history of education and educational leadership and she supervises research students across both fields. In addition, Tanya has undertaken a number of research projects with colleagues in New Zealand and England and has recently completed a cross-national project on Indigenous women and educational leadership. This project has received international attention and Tanya has been invited to address audiences in a number of countries and serve on national research advisory committees.
Tanya has won a number of prestigious prizes for her research and has published widely in a number of scholarly journals and books. Tanya has recently been awarded a Spencer Foundation Research Grant and will be researching and writing a history of women professors in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Since 2000, Tanya has been the Chief Editor of History of Education Review and in 2006 was appointed editor of the New Zealand Journal of Educational Leadership. In 2007, she was joint editor (with Professor Helen Gunter, University of Manchester) of the Journal of Educational Administration and History and from 2006 was appointed Book Reviews Editor of this journal. Both Tanya and Helen have been appointed co-editors of this journal from 2008.
