The International Encyclopedia of Communication Research Methods (2017)

Abstract
Cognitive scripts are mental models that tell us how to “do” routine and nonroutine activities; they are invaluable sociocultural resources that we utilize to successfully and smoothly play our parts in our social worlds. We learn cognitive scripts through the process of socialization and subsequently draw on them to anticipate, decode, and strategically engage in social activity.
