Even with the increase of women serving in political roles within the United States, we still have a long way to go in terms of the representation of women in public elected roles. Unfortunately, a primary factor that plays into this is the presence of unique challenges and barriers that women have faced either during their campaigns or while they serve in their elected positions. These challenges and barriers inherently discourage women from running for these roles. This article will highlight the challenges and barriers that women elected officials have faced on the campaign trail and serving in office.
