How Women Integrate Feminine and Masculine Styles of Leadership to be Successful
LinkedIn (2018)
  • Susan R. Madsen
Abstract
The point of this research study was to explore how women leaders navigate this communal-agentic divide. For women, this is a “double-bind.” Society in general expects women to be communal and leaders to be agentic. So, if a woman is communal and not agentic she will not be viewed as a leader. However, if she is agentic she may be viewed as a leader, but then she breaks social norms and is often not liked unless she also displays communal characteristics. Hence, women frequently need to navigate these tensions.
