Women and Bragging: Facilitating Women’s Self-Promotion
LinkedIn (2018)
  • Susan R. Madsen
Abstract
Women are socialized to publicly appear modest, while men often do not need to adhere to that social norm. This modesty, according to the authors, often means denying credit for successes, taking responsibility for failures, lacking pretentiousness, and displaying only a moderate opinion of themselves (expectations for men are very different). Smith and Huntoon conducted an experimental research study that looked deeply at some of these issues. They compared female students who promoted themselves (boasted or bragged) on a scholarship application essay to those who promoted others, as a letter of reference, to see if there were differences in several areas.
