Abstract
This presentation will discuss the use of a novel approach to teaching and evaluating nursing and nurse practitioner students by simulating a patient scenario. This pilot mini clinical evaluation workshop is a collaborative project including senior level undergraduate nursing students and senior level FNP students. Evaluation was performed using the Calgary Cambridge Mini-CEX tool. In addition to the live patient simulation evaluation we measured to see if there was any relationship between the patient/provider evaluations done by the student nurses (patients), the student nurse practitioners (providers), and the faculty using the Mini-CEX tool. Most NP programs rely upon preceptors to perform clinical evaluations of the students. Students have often reported that preceptors do not always allow them to thoroughly use their interview and assessment skills in the clinical area. Studies investigating the perceptions of readiness for practice among newly graduated nurse practitioners demonstrated that they do not feel well prepared for clinical practice. Nursing (BSN) students are required to learn about disease processes that they will be dealing with once graduated so that they can provide the best possible nursing care to facilitate good outcomes for their patients. In addition, they must have an empathetic understanding of what the experience of being a patient is about to help patients navigate the healthcare system. Nursing faculty are encouraged to utilize novel teaching strategies and evaluation techniques to help students learn didactic material, as well as participate in self-reflection. It is rare that opportunities to work together in a learning environment arise for undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Collaboration between the undergraduate and graduate programs will enhance the knowledge base and of both groups of students and provide for a stronger program for both entities.
