About Susan Halverson-Westerberg (Emerita)

Susan Halverson-Westerberg, PhD, LMFT, LPC, NCSC, is chair of the Couples, Marriage and Family specialty in the Graduate School of Education's Counseling program. Dr. Halverson-Westerberg trains her students to look at their clients' worlds from a systems perspective because people function in systems, not as isolates. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and professional counselor and has been a certified school counselor. She also is a practitioner of play therapy where children use their play as words to describe and resolve their problems. These various hats come together in her courses in couples, marriage and family therapy and school counseling.

As clinical coordinator of the Counselor Education Program at PSU, Dr. Halverson-Westerberg promotes PSU's Community Counseling Clinic which is the crowning jewel of the counseling program. Not only does the clinic provide service to a public that often cannot afford to seek private therapy, but it gives practicum students the opportunity to train in a fully operational clinic under the direct tutelage of counseling interns and faculty in preparation for agency based internships. Individually supervised practicum students see individuals, couples, families and children at two clinic locations on campus.
