Abstract

This book chapter contains an overview of recent work on mechanisms -- especially the work of myself, Bechtel, Craver, Darden and Machamer. The essay discusses the competing analyses of the concept of mechanism and applications of this work to other areas of research in the philosophy of science, including laws, causation, reduction, explanation, and discovery.
