About Steven D. Smith

Steven D. Smith is a Research Associate Professor and Director of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology. He received his B.A. in history from the Virginia Military Institute (1973), his M.A. in anthropology from the University of Kentucky (1983), and his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of South Carolina (2010). Prior to becoming Director of the Institute, he was Associate Director of the Institute’s Applied Research Division and, prior to that, was a staff archaeologist with the Louisiana State Historic Preservation Office. In addition to his research duties, which have largely focused on military and battlefield archaeology, he teaches in the University’s Department of Anthropology.
