Abstract

This article provides information on the paper titled "Personal Relationships Research in the 1980s: Towards an Understanding of Complex Human Sociality," presented in the program Seminar Series, introduced by the Speech Communication Association. There are several different levels of analysis at which the area of relationship research is in need of conceptual and theoretical advance levels: concerning the focus of certain work; the ultimate value of certain limited questions in the wider scheme of things; the utility of certain new questions and, in short, the ripeness of the time for expanding our whole view of relationships. A major trend in personal relationship research is toward a more careful recording, description and analysis of the things that people actually do in real life acquaintance.
