Abstract

Investigates the genealogy of the giant panda. Comparison of the homologous proteins from the giant panda, the red panda, the raccoon and several bears; Use of the principles of the molecular clock hypothesis to construct a phylogenetic diagram; DNA data indicating that the giant panda is more closely related to bears that to raccoons; Bizarre type of chromosomes seen in the giant panda.
