Abstract
It is estimated that in 2021, in the United States, over 15,000 children will be diagnosed with a pediatric cancer with over 1700 succumbing to cancer. It is well known that malnutrition can increase the risk of infections, mortality, and decreased clinical outcomes for this patient population. In fact, nearly 60% of pediatric cancer patients will be affected by malnutrition at some point throughout their therapy. Ensuring adequate nutritional status and weight maintenance throughout therapy is vital to overall outcomes from therapy. There are multiple interventions that can be used to improve and maintain nutritional status, which include oral nutritional supplements (ONS), appetite stimulants, and nutrition support via enteral or parenteral nutrition. However, evaluation of oral nutritional supplements and appetite stimulants have not been systematically reviewed. This registration contains the protocol and methodology behind the systematic review of oral nutritional supplements and appetite stimulants in pediatric oncology patients undergoing active anti-cancer therapy.
