Research Assistant Professor
Dr. Stanley Mubako joined the University of Texas at El Paso’s Center for Environmental Resource Management as Research Assistant Professor after a postdoctoral fellowship at Arizona State University. He holds a joint appointment with UTEP’s Geological Sciences Department, where he teaches geospatial technology courses, and is a contributing faculty member of the Environmental Science and Engineering Ph.D. program. A certified Geographic Information System Professional and Geomentor, he received a Ph.D. in Environmental Resources and Policy from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and holds a Masters in Water Resources and Environmental Management from the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft, The Netherlands; Postgraduate International Diploma in Exploration, Exploitation and Management of Groundwater Resources, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Rehovot, Israel; and a Bachelor of Science Honors in Soil Science from the University of Zimbabwe. His dissertation focusing on virtual water flows among U.S. states was a first place recipient of a National Ph.D. Dissertation Award in Water Policy and Socio-Economics from the Universities Council on Water Resources.
His work has focused on applications of GIS and remote sensing technologies on human health and the environment, urbanization, water resources management, water footprint analysis, and virtual water trade. His collaborative research has been supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. National Science Foundation, and the Great Lakes Protection Fund. He has implemented training programs focusing on the integration of geospatial technologies into school curricula, and transfer of Web/Internet GIS skills to K12 teachers, supported by the Environmental Systems Research Institute. He is a recipient of awards from the Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program, Israel Agency for International Development Cooperation (Mashav), and is a fellow of the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program, supported by the Institute of International Education and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
