Abstract
A three-person panel will focus on the impact of educational, humanitarian, and research partners to demonstrate how partnerships can effectively design learning spaces for students to create their own spaces of hope and agency in protracted refugee situations. In the examined educational context, Jesuit Worldwide Learning: Higher Education at the Margins (JWL) provides educational solutions to meet a community's needs from Stage 1: Language Acquisition and Community Impact courses to Stage 2: Vocational/Skills-based program to Stage 3: University Diploma certification. Unlike individual university offerings, JWL focuses on the formation of the person across the learning continuum.  Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS) is one of the primary partners with JWL, and provides the on-site coordinator and tutors as well as the learning center, and the technological capacity to run the online courses offered through JWL. JRS establishes the physical spaces for learning at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya that not only supports psychosocial wellbeing but also serves as a platform for spaces  where students can develop self-agency and critical thinking skills. The partnership between JWL and JRS is enhanced through virtual support systems as well as daily and weekly virtual communications to support the learning center and the students. JWL and JRS work in conjunction with a community-based action researcher on the ground who is exploring how hope in participants and partners plays a role in learning, psychosocial wellbeing, and peace-building.
