Librarian
Since 2001, Dr. Stacey Greenwell has served the University of Kentucky Libraries in several roles, including Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Research, Head of the Information Commons (the Hub), and Head of Desktop Support. Currently she is Coordinator of Educational Services as well as an instructional designer and has recently co-authored the second edition of Academic Librarianship (ALA Editions), the fourth edition of Management Basics for Information Professionals (ALA Editions & Facet Publishing), the ninth edition of Library Programs and Services: the Fundamentals (Bloomsbury Libraries Unlimited), and the second edition of Learning in Information-Rich Environments: I-LEARN and the Construction of Knowledge from Information (Springer). She is also the liaison librarian to the Lewis Honors College and the College of Communication and Information.
As Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Research for six years, she was administratively responsible for all public services based in the William T. Young Library (reference, information literacy, information commons, circulation, interlibrary loan, audio-visual services) as well as nine branch locations. Prior to that, for four years she was the Head of the Information Commons (the Hub), a vibrant, collaborative student space which combined a technology help desk and computer lab with traditional library reference services. She was also the library liaison to the English Department. She began her UK career in Desktop Support, providing technology management and technical consultation to library employees. She has served on numerous committees, such as a past chair of the campus Academic Computing Committee and a past chair of the University Libraries Faculty Council.
Active in the Special Libraries Association (SLA) since 2001, Dr. Greenwell is a member of the Academic & Education, Information Technology, Kentucky, and Leadership and Management Communities. She was inducted into the SLA Fellows in 2009 and was the recipient of the Dow Jones Leadership Award in 2010. She has served the Information Technology Community in a number of roles, including Chair in 2007 and Program Planner in 2005 and was the recipient of the Grieg Aspnes Outstanding Member Award in 2010. Leading the petition drive to launch the Academic Community in 2008, she was the community's first chair and was the first recipient of the Outstanding Member Award in 2011. She has served on a number of association-level committees, including the Centennial Commission, 2010 Annual Conference Planning Committee, Finance Committee, Nominating Committee, Contributed Papers Committee, Technology Advisory Council, Professional Development Advisory Council, and Leadership Advisory Council. She has twice been a candidate for the SLA Board of Directors. She has served the Kentucky Chapter in a number of roles and was the recipient of the chapter's Outstanding Member Award in 2008 and the chapter's Professional Award in 2006 and 2013. In 2015 she served as Director on the Leadership and Management Executive Board. Currently she is Co-Editor of Practical Academic Librarianship: The International Journal of the SLA Academic Division.
She is participating in other international leadership activities through her involvement annually on the Program Committee of the European Conference on Information Literacy (ECIL). She was a Standing Committee Member for the Education and Training Section (SET) of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), 2015-2019.
Dr. Greenwell is a 2009 Frye/Leading Change Leadership Institute Fellow and a recipient of the Lyrasis NextGen Librarian Award for Leadership. She has been invited to speak at multiple conferences on library and technology-related topics. She wrote about information commons, library, and technology issues on The Uncommon Commons blog. She has taught an academic libraries course for the iSchools at Syracuse University and the University of Kentucky.
She earned a doctorate from the University of Kentucky's College of Education in Instruction and Administration, Instructional Systems Design. She also holds an MLS and a BA in English.
