Status of Open Access Repositories in India

Abstract
Efforts are on to make the research available to the public without any restrictions by Open Access repositories in India. This paper discusses about growth of open access repositories in the country. The data collected from the Registry of Open Access Repositories and Internet suggests that there is a remarkable growth of open access repositories since 2004 after taking call from Budapest Open Access Initiative and Berlin declaration. Till date, 68 open access repositories are in India and out of them 11, are listed in the top 800 repositories of the web of world repositories. The OpenMED@NIC of National Informatics Centre India is at 118 th position, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi at 800 th place. ePrints@IISc of Indian Institute of Science is the oldest repository with highest records (30066) ranking 161. Even in the absence of any national open access policy, the institutions, academies and scholars have contributed to the open access movement in India.
