Abstract
The efforts to build an online repository for Indian agricultural thesis and dissertations had started in the year 2008 and resulted in the establishment of Krishiprabha - Indian Agricultural Doctoral Dissertations Repository within 2 years from its commencement as project under National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP). It is committed to host all the dissertations produced in India during 2000-2007 from the agricultural universities/institutes and by the end of march 2011, 5759 full-text dissertations were uploaded into the database developed with the eQuest software and hosted at Nehru Library, Ch. Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. However, the access to the database is only given to the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) constituents for online viewing whereas, the Institutional Repository of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Eprints@CMFRI has made all the 171 thesis open for public to access. Similarly, the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad had also made open for full-text downloads via its etd@uasd of all the thesis submitted to it from the year 2005 onwards. It is to be noted that except, Eprints@CMFRI other two repositories are not built on software which is of complaint with Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) and there are no usage policies which are formulated for the use and reuse of the material deposited in the repositories. Therefore, I would like to propose ver. 2.0 of the Krishiprabha project for increasing the availability and accessibility of the agricultural research produced in India. The next version should be based on OAI-PMH complaint software and open access policies. For this, there should be an advocacy on 'openness' and a national dialog with the NARS constituents on the issues of ETD policies and programs, software, Interoperability etc for an Open Access National Agricultural Thesis and Dissertations Repository of India.
