Abstract
The Successful Latina/o Students Research Project started at a large urban university with the purpose of studying and documenting the personal stories of Latina/o students who regardless of the big challenges they faced entered an academic program in this university (Zalaquett, p. 37). Twelve Latina/o students, ten female and two male, were selected to participate in this research project. Ten of the twelve students were first generation and their family cultural backgrounds included Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Venezuelan. The students were chosen among the students who had received a Latino scholarship to attend the urban university. The criteria used to award this Latino scholarship were: bilingual (Spanish and English), 3.00 minimum GPA, graduated from an accredited high school, financial need proven through the Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). Students do not have to apply for this scholarship; they are selected from the group of students who have met the scholarship requirements and have been admitted to the university. Following their selection, the scholarship recipients are required to attend an interview to confirm that they do meet the requirements.
