About Sophia Airhart, MD

Sophia Airhart, MD, is a heart failure specialist with the Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Cardiac Transplantation Team.

She has a passion for hemodynamics, and experience in performing invasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing.  She is an expert in pulmonary hypertension and an associate editorial team lead for the Pulmonary Hypertension and Venous Thromboembolism section of ACC.org with the American College of Cardiology.

Her clinical interests include: hemodynamics in pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, as well as the use of mechanical assist devices in management of shock and advanced heart failure. 

Dr. Airhart is a clinical researcher who has served as a principle investigator on numerous HFpEF and HFrEF clinical trials. She is also interested in translational research, namely developing novel therapy to address mitochondrial dysfunction in systolic heart failure and was awarded an American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship Award for her work.

She is an Associate Editor for Circulation: Heart Failure and the Section Editor of the invasive hemodynamic section Under Pressure. She also is the Digital Media Editor for CircHF Waveforms leading a team of residents and fellows to help make scientific literature more accessible. She has authored multiple original research publications as well as several book chapters.

She earned her medical degree at Oregon Health Sciences University; completed her residency in internal medicine at Barnes Jewish Hospital - Washington School of Medicine in St. Louis; completed her cardiology fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA; and completed an advanced fellowship in heart failure/transplant cardiology with a focus on pulmonary hypertension at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA She is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, echocardiography, and advanced heart failure and transplantation.
