About Soonkie Nam

Dr. Soonkie Nam joined the department of Civil Engineering and Construction Management at the Georgia Southern University in Fall 2017. Dr. Nam received his doctorate and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech. He also earned B.E. and M.E. degrees in Civil Engineering from Ajou University in South Korea. He served as a combat engineer and construction engineer officer in the Republic of Korea Marine Corps, and worked as a researcher at the Engineering Research Institute of Ajou University before coming to Virginia Tech. Before joining the CECM department, Dr. Nam was an assistant professor at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He supervised four MS students and twelve undergraduate students in seven funded research projects. Dr. Nam’s research interests are unsaturated soil characteristics and their applications, expansive soils, soil improvement using byproducts, laboratory and in-situ geotechnical experiments, numerical modeling on seepage and slope stability, and geotechnical practices in pavement engineering.
