About Sofia Wolhein Nava

My passion in regard to research definitely centers around the teaching of language, language acquisition, curriculum development and literary creative work. I have completed action-research on these topics both individually and with colleagues to inform my own teaching in the areas of vocabulary acquisition and extensive reading in the second language. I have also developed courses that were in demand to fulfill student needs such as a course of Spanish for Portuguese Speakers in 2015. I had the opportunity to teach Spanish at the high school level for a year in 2016, before coming back to the university setting and continuing my research efforts in the area of conceptual metaphor and the connection with vocabulary acquisition and intercultural understanding of linguistic expressions. Recently I collaborated with colleagues from Oakwood University, even when not working at this institution, in a project about how proficient listening skill in the second language can benefit some aspects of pronunciation in the second language. Lastly, understanding culture is also something that interests me in how the voices that are not heard normally, such as those from immigrants, can reach the academic and social spheres in order to get a chance to be heard in the form of testimonios, a literary genre that is prolific in Spanish, in which the academic lends a hand to the subordinate so that his/her voice might reach the space to be heard.
