About M. Patricia Dougherty

Patricia Dougherty, O.P. is a Dominican Sister of San Rafael and Professor Emerita of History at Dominican University of California where she received her BA in 1967. She taught elementary school (grades 4 through 8) for ten years in Reno, NV, Livermore, CA, and Oakland, CA.  She then returned to school and earned her MA and PhD in Modern European History at Georgetown University and received a Fulbright grant to work on her doctoral dissertation in Paris in 1981-82.  She began college teaching in 1984. She teaches a variety of courses on Europe (medieval to present) and women in U.S. and Europe.  She loves to work with students and always learns from interacting with them in the classroom and outside.  She was Teacher of the Year in 1994.

Her research area is nineteenth century France.  Recipient of NEH grants, she studied “The Woman Question in Western Thought” at Stanford University and “Revolution and Changing Identities in France, 1787-1799" at the Newberry Library in Chicago. She has led short travel abroad study trips (e.g., Japan, Egypt, Paris, London, Thailand-Vietnam, Greece, and a Mediterranean Cruise).  Since 1996, she co-leads a study abroad trip to France for faculty, staff and students from Dominican institutions of higher education.  She likes to walk, do yoga, garden, and read.
