Abstract
This research discusses about the representation of tomboy identity in the film Inside Out. The film made by two of the greatest animators, Walt Disney and Pixar attracted much public attention, especially the children. The film tells the story of how a girl named Riley has to adapt to a new neighborhood in San Francisco. In the adjustment itself Riley experienced different emotional problems with the visualization of emotional characters such as Joy (Glad), Anger (Anger), evil (Disgust), fear (Fear), and (Sadness). Theories used to dissect research are communication theory, representation, and gender. This research was conducted by using semiotic qualitative methodology, with the aim to know the meaning behind the film. The methodology used in this research is Semiotic with Charles Sanders Peirce thinking. The result of this research is there is representation of tomboy identity at main character that is Riley through emotional characters. The Inside Out movie represents the tomboy identity as a form of feminine female identity change with the characters (beautiful, white, slim, and a princess) into a masculine woman with character (brave, tough, adventurous and capable).
