About Dr Silvia A Nelson

Dr Silvia Nelson BBus (UFC, Brazil), MBA (CQU), MHRM (CQU), PhD (Griffith)
I am an academic who has taught and researched both in Brazil, my native country and in Australia, my adopted country. My PhD was awarded in 2007 and it was focused on HRM/HRD in the Australian aquatic theme park segment of the tourism industry. I have continued to pursue my interest in that industry, including current longitudinal research on the impact of aquatic theme parks on regional development.
My current research interests also include health and nursing management, engineering asset management, organisational learning (with a focus on professional staff) and employee engagement/commitment in New Public Management organisational environments. I am currently researching the relationship between supervisors and staff for nursing professionals in Brazil and its association with employee engagement and employee productivity, including nurse well-being and quality of patient care. This project is part of a comparative international research project on nursing management (Australia, Brazil and other countries including Italy, USA and UK). I am also part of a research team on Engineering Asset Management which has uncovered some of the underlying human/management factors behind costly and catastrophic asset failure. This work is integrated with long-standing technical work on extending asset life and reliability by paying close attention to the human capital of asset management organisations.
I teach in both the undergraduate and post-graduate HRM programs and am Course Coordinator of the HRM Masters program for the School of Business and Tourism. I have a keen interest in teaching and learning, possibly prompted by my experience as an international student and lecturer, and I am currently completing a Grad Certificate in Academic Practice. I currently co-supervise four post-grad students in HRM (DBA and PhD). I am a reviewer for the Academy of Management (AOM), Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM), Journal of Nursing Management and the International Journal of Human Resource Management and am a member of Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI), British Academy of Management (BAM), Academy of Management (AOM), and Brazilian Human Resources Association (ABRH/MA).
