About Dr. Shawn Bergman

Dr. Shawn Bergman’s research focuses on how social media and analytics can be used to meet organizational objectives, the legal issues surrounding using social media for employment decisions, and the application of analytics to human resources. He has served on multiple panels at the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychologists and the Academy of Management conferences discussing the use of social media in organizational settings and has published multiple research and review book chapters on how social media can be used for employee recruiting and selection.

Bergman co-founded the university’s Center for Analytics Research and Education (CARE), which uses big data to work toward prosocial human behavioral change in sustainability, education, economic development, human resources, science, and health and wellness. He is also former director of Appalachian’s Office of Research Consultation, providing faculty across the university with input in the design and execution of their research.

Additionally, Bergman founded and co-directs the HR Science Research team at Appalachian. The group advances knowledge within the human resources (HR) field through the use of analytics and technology. The role of HR within organizations is rapidly changing from administrative to strategic, due largely to HR analytics which can offer insights for effective management of  employees and help an organization reach its goals.
