Abstract/Excerpt

Research indicates that the primary onset of eating disorders occurs in adolescence and that there is a growing prevalence of adolescent males with eating disorders. In this article we describe the eating disorders of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa as they relate to adolescent males. Diagnostic criteria, at-risk groups, and implications for school counselors are each discussed. The importance of the school counselor's role in identification, referral, psycho-education, and support services for this population is critical.
