NHSC Provider Retention in High Need AreasSelected Projects (2015)
Since 1972, the National Health Services Corps (NHSC) has provided scholarships and loan repayment incentives for a large number of primary care, mental health, and dental health clinicians to work in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) across the country. The objective of this study was to examine short-and long-term retention in high-need areas of providers who participated in the NHSC’s Loan Repayment Program (LRP) and Scholarship Program (SP) and compare their retention with retention of non-participants. We also conducted multivariate regression analyses to provide additional insights into the individual-level factors and local area characteristics that are associated with retention of program participants in HPSAs.
