Abstract
Loon is a wonderful text that— as most thoroughly complex and interesting texts do— starts with a very simple premise, an unsuccessful loon hunt, and shows the reader how an investigation of meaning in cultural context fans out into a myriad of previously unconnected thoughts, events, rules, actions, and interpretations. In short, it brings to the attention of the reader the idea that cultures are extremely deep systems of meaning, and that we
can explore these meanings from the observation of everyday events. However, Loon also reminds the reader that such an exploration needs to be informed, deep, and thorough, and must not stop at superficial observations.
