About Dr Simon Diffey

Dr Diffey receieved his PhD with a thesis titled, "A new REML(PX)EM algorithm for linear mixed models and factor analytic mixed models". An outcome of this work is to broaden and improve the types of algorithms which can be practically applied to the analysis of plant improvement data.
Prior to joining the University of Wollongong in 2012, Dr Diffey worked for 10 years as a consulting biometrician in the NSW Department of Primary Industries. In this role most of his work related to the grains industry.
This current UOW position is part funded by a Grains Research Development Corporation (GRDC) project titled "Statistics for the Australian Grains Industry (SAGI)". This project will deliver statistical support and training, develop innovative statistical technologies and statistical software to the grains industry of Australia
Field of Study:
REML (PX)EM algorithm for linear mixed models and factor analytic mixed models, Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) identification and marker-trait association, genetic map construction
Professional Activities and Affiliations:
• Member, Centre for Statistical and Survey Methodology (CSSM)
• Project leader, "Statistics for the Australian Pork Industry (SAPI)" which provides statistical support to sub-programme 4B of the CRC for High Integrity Australian Pork (HIAP)
