Abstract
The year 2020 had more than its share of watershed moments. We use the adjective “watershed” to refer not only to the momentousness of the year’s events, but also to the tears we collectively shed. The year 2020 was the year of broken hearts. It was the year that two million people died from a new virus that came to be known as COVID-19, a virus that attacks the respiratory and circulatory system in unpredictable and deadly ways.

The year 2020 has been called the cruelest of years because of other landmark events that transpired with tragic backdrop and consequences. More innocent and unarmed African-Americans were killed by White authority figures, continuing a disturbing centuries-long trend of white-on-black aggression and oppression. The list of victims is long and heartbreaking. Two killings that were especially poignant and painful to confront were the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. These slayings were noteworthy enough to galvanize a movement known as Black Lives Matter.

This book, authored by six psychology students and their professor at the University of Richmond, offers a psychological analysis of the heroes and villains associated with the two pandemics of COVID-19 and racism. The book focuses on the politics of the two pandemics, the role of social media, the frontline healthcare workers, the anti-racism protests, and how the two pandemics intersected.
