Abstract
While some heroism scientists have proposed that heroism can be defined objectively, others adopt a more subjective approach to defining heroism. Subjectivists argue that objective criteria are open to vast interpretation. For example, when objectivists claim that heroism requires exceptional action, subjectivists will debate how “exceptional” an action has to be. This chapter uses case studies of heroism to argue for the subjectivist position, using examples of transposed heroism in Severus Snape, Jerry Givens, Oskar Schindler, and the Grinch.
