Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to provide an analysis of the heroic transformation of Desmond Doss. In doing so, I will focus on his transformation as it pertains to Joseph Campbell’s hero’s monomyth (Campbell, 1949). I will also analyze several other areas of heroic transformation such as the categori-cal shift from dependence to autonomy (Allison & Goethals, 2017), and his status as an underdog (Vandello et al., 2017), a transcendent hero (Goethals & Allison, 2012), and a martial hero (Franco, Blau, & Zimbardo, 2011). My analysis will also explore the benefits of suffering undergone by Doss and his fellow soldiers (Allison & Setterberg, 2016). This chapter will conclude with a brief description of the heroic characteristics that aided Doss on his journey, with emphasis on the “great eight” traits most commonly found among heroes (Allison et al., 2017).
