The purpose of this chapter is to shed light on the life of the late Cassius Marcellus Clay, otherwise known as Muhammad Ali. My goal with this chapter is to elucidate the heroic transformations that Ali underwent in order to become an exalted hero in the sporting realm, and then later in the global realm. No other athlete in history has created as an enduring a legacy as Ali. His legendary status can be explained by the many heroic traits that he came to acquire during his heroic transformation. Ali was not only an icon, but a role model, leader, and inspiration to people of all ethnicities in a time where racial equality was nearly nonexistent.
